Membership

A club worth belonging to

Seven-day golf on a true links for £942 a year — less than many Hampshire parkland courses charge for less interesting golf. But the fee is the smallest part of it.

Why members stay

The golf, first. A links that plays differently every single day, because the wind off the Solent rewrites the course overnight. Eighteen tees, eleven greens, and holes that have been asking the same honest questions since 1885.

Then the club itself. A recently refurbished clubhouse that is the social heart of the place — live music that non-members cross town for, catering that is friendly and good value, and a competition calendar run through the ClubV1 members’ hub. This is a members’ club in the real sense: run by its members, for its members, as a Community Amateur Sports Club.

And the setting. You play along Fort Monckton’s walls, over the old moat ground, with the Isle of Wight across the water and the ferries crossing to Ryde behind the greens. There is nowhere else in Hampshire quite like it.

I’ve been a club member for over 20 years and have made many friends, both golfers and socially. As one of the oldest clubs in the country it is a very challenging golf course. A friendly welcome awaits everyone who visits the clubhouse.

Tony Keefe

I was looking for a club to join and had the chance to play in a Pro-Am at GSBGC three years ago. I enjoyed it so much that I joined as soon as I finished the round.

The course is fantastic, but what really stood out was the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It’s a genuinely social club with great people, and it’s a place I always look forward to visiting.

The intermediates pathway

Eighteen to twenty-eight, one gentle step a year

Full seven-day membership from the day you turn eighteen — at a fee that starts at £250 and steps up annually until you reach £900 at 28. No compromise on playing rights along the way. If you are a younger golfer weighing this against a pay-and-play habit, the arithmetic is short.

The year-by-year schedule between the two is available from the Secretary.
